The Midwest Book Review continues the outstanding praise for Christopher Klim’s, books review, WRITE TO PUBLISH: Essentials for the Modern Fiction & Memoir Market.

“Write to Publish covers all the typical areas you would expect in a basic book on writing fiction,” states the MWBR. “The author discusses such things as openings, developing believable characters, point of view, setting the story landscape and working with plot development. This basic information is followed by two sections that separate this book from other basic writing books.

First is a chapter on professional revision that actually goes through the items that should be examined in the review process. It includes such items as reexamining structure plot, character traits, simplifying sentence structure, and varying sentence structure, paragraph length, and word choice. The rest of the book predominantly contains information on how to get your book published. This includes tips for writing query letters, dealing with agents, submission etiquette, and even dealing with rejection.

The greatest value of this book is that it covers all the relevant areas of getting your fiction book written and published. These areas are covered at a somewhat basic level and you can find other books … but then again, they tend to not be as thorough in covering all aspects of writing and publishing.”

Klim, author of the acclaimed satire Jesus Lives in Trenton, is known for his writing seminars and mastery of story structure. (www.ChristopherKlim.com) As Write to Publish enters the market and Klim embarkes on another lengthy tour, the Midwest’s review adds to the early praise:

โ€œI swear if I had read this book twenty years ago I would be on a book tour right now โ€ฆ Write to Publish is a cornucopia of tips, tricks of the trade, and insights gathered by the author over his past twenty years as a writer and educator.

โ€ฆ a must read for every yet to be published writer.โ€

โ€”Maggie Harding, Book Crazy Radio

โ€œKlim covers the process of writing publishable novels, memoirs and short stories from concept to marketing. A must read for all who labor with an eye toward publication. Klim’s insights into the craft โ€” plot, characterizations, pacing, viewpoint โ€” are laced with wit and wisdom. A must-have book for all who aspire to write skillfully and sell what they write.โ€

โ€”Robert Gover, author of One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding

โ€œPractical, good-humored advice.

What Klim includes is unusual and very helpful: examples of his own query letters and a novel synopsis, examples of what a short story first page should look like, as well as a novel submission. โ€ฆ something I’ve never seen in โ€œhow toโ€ books; he dissects his own short story by showing us the parts, including a character sketch and an extremely helpful โ€œscene and sequel analysis,โ€ which leads the reader through the building blocks of creating this story.โ€ (see full review)

โ€”Deborah Kaple, author of Dream of a Red Factory

โ€œI was impressed at how he was able to provide the reader with the essential elements needed to breathe life into a manuscript.

โ€ฆ this author is sharing his success strategies by having tried each method personally. โ€ฆ I am confident that by following his very detailed advice from point A to Z, there is no way that you could prevent your work from finding its way into the printed world society.โ€ (see full review)

Single Women – Find Your Smile

Several years ago I broke up with a man I thought I’d marry someday. Unfortunately, we came to some major road blocks in our relationships. He was not willing to see a therapist, and I was not willing to deal with issues I thought were likely to compound over time. About the same time, my mother’s health got worse and I was felt forced to spend time and money caring for her. Needless to say, men were not banging on my door asking me out. I gained some weight, became somewhat depressed and just got by doing what had to be done.

Shortly after my last boyfriend and I broke up, I found a Pit Bull near death. She’s was savaging garbage cans for food. Her open wounds and scaring indicated that she had been used for fighting. $1000 and 4 weeks later, the dog was ready for adoption. I tried to place her, but the only people interested in adopting her wanted to use her for protection. She’s had been through so much abuse and suffering that I just didn’t think it was right to place her in a situation where she might have to endure more abuse. Besides, she loved everyone she met.

So three years later I still have my very loving, high energy, dog aggressive Pit Bull. I have had inflammation in my feet for years and my dog needs strong exercise. No matter what I think, feel or do, I have to exercise her. A few months ago I got a great device that attaches to my bike. It’s called a dog jogger. It allows me to run my dog on my bicycle. Most days we fly up and down hills through a corporate office park near my house. This activity has resulted in an unexpected perk….as we zoomed down our first hill, I felt like a kid on her favorite swing. There was a giggle in my belly. As I smiled from the inside, a grin landed on my face. Since then, life just keeps getting better every day!

Unless an author has a colossal ego, he feels some measure of dejection after receiving a rejection letter from a literary agent or publisher.I was no exception. In responding to or internalizing the rejection, the author needs to draw from those same reserves of tenacity and resilience that enabled him to complete the book.

I never approached publishers with the book, but did shop it out to approximately forty-five literary agents.I received plenty of rejection letters. To my pleasant surprise, I also received a letter of interest from a prominent agent in Los Angeles.

Representation was contingent on my making the novel entirely non-fiction, something I was unwilling to do.It’s highly unlikely a first time author will land a literary agent. It seldom happens. If an agent does take on a neophyte author, there is a good chance concessions will be demanded of that author.Having an agent certainly helps open doors, but is not essential.More and more authors are going it their own without an agent and are being met with a good deal of success.

The literary agent’s ultimatum made me even more determined to see that the book reached an audience on my terms.

In order to retain creative control, I elected to use a print on demand publisher. In addition to offering the book on Amazon and through four other e-tailers, I released the work as an audiobook.May 2009 it was the second most popular download on Podiobooks.com, with 8000 downloads in 4 days, and remained on their top ten list for six weeks, so it appears the book is finding that audience.

The point in sharing this experience is to drive home the fact that the best way to deal with rejection is to minimize the risk of rejection.

If you are a first time author and the first publishers you approach are the conglomerate publishing houses, you are setting yourself up for rejection. If you are a first time author and you send letters of inquiry to literary agents at CAA and William Morris, you are setting yourself up for rejection. If you are a first time author and you send your galley to the New York Times or Atlantic Weekly for a book review, you are setting yourself up for rejection. It is good to be self-confident in your skill set as author and in your finished product, but when it’s the first dance at the cotillion, don’t start with the Fortune 500 heirs.

Demonstrate your grace and prowess on the ballroom floor with a lesser suitor, and allow the titans of industry to take notice and pursue you.Bat those eyes and work the hips. It’s much more desirable to be wooed than to woo in this business.Be patient and build a reputation for your book and yourself as an author.Create a buzz and allow for the ripple effect. If you can generate sufficient interest at a grassroots level for a book that has merit and commercial potential, the larger publishers and agents will come to you.

Reviews are more of a wildcard.Even a commercial hit can be panned by the critics. As an English Lit major, I had to work hard to set aside convention and write honestly and from the heart.I’m not suggesting you forget the rules of grammar or three act construction. What I am suggesting is that traditional and narrow “literary merit” can be distinguished from contemporary and broader substantive merit.A book may not go down as a classic, but if it’s a good story told well, it will reach its desired audience and do more to establish your reputation as author than will critical accolades.

The critic that writes a negative review often is focused on the literary merit of a work, and not whether it is, simply, a well crafted and entertaining book. The focus is often on whether the work ranks as a “great book” using the classics as yardstick. This is not realistic, nor particularly relevant to anyone other than newspaper and magazine publishers that know negative reviews sell more copy than do positive reviews.Regardless of how neutral or altruistic the reviewer believes himself to be, they are, like the rest of us, fatally flawed humans with biases.

And those biases taint their reviews. At the end of the day, the old adage, “any press is good press” holds true here, so long as there is some positive chatter to offset the hatchet jobs.

For, books review, me, personally, rejection or a critical review strengthens my resolve to achieve my goals for the book.It helps motivate me to get more creative in devising workaround alternatives to mainstream distribution channels and marketing. If a particular agent, publisher or critic responded negatively to the work, how do I reach an agent, publisher or critic that may be more receptive to my story and its presentation?Always keep in mind that publishing is a business.

A rejection is not necessarily a commentary on the quality of your story or the telling of it; it is often nothing more than a commentary on its perceived commerciality.

Owlknight (Valdemar: Darian’s Tale, Book 3) Review

Darian, thought orphaned and reared by his village, adopted by the tayledras, a forest people of Valdemar, and brought into magehood by the legendary mage, Firesong, matures fully in Owlknight. His maturity and accomplishments earn him knighthood in his own people, through his sponsor, Lord Breon and full membership in the Ghost Cat clan.

In OwlKnight, Darian discovers that his parents, long thought dead, may have been caught in a “change”, a national phenomenon that relocates one part of the land to another site. Along with his soon to be life partner, the village healer, Keisha, her Herald sister, Shandi and several of their closest friends, he set out to try to find his parents and therein lies the story.

Darian’s tale is a wonderfully enjoyable trilogy with a satisfactory ending but, for most enjoyment, start reading at the beginning with Owlflight and Owlsight rather than here with Owlknight although each book is nicely selfcontained

Owlknight (Valdemar: Darian’s Tale, Book 3) Specifications

Owlknight follows Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon’s two earlier novels about Darian Firkin, Owlflight and Owlsight. By now the boy who ran from barbarian invaders is both knight of Valdemar and a master mage; he is governor of a small province and in love with Keisha who returns his feelings, but he still has problems and responsibilities. For one thing, he has never solved the mystery of what happened to his parents. For another, Keisha refuses to marry him lest his role as governor and hers of healer come into conflict–and there are still barbarians beyond the border who threaten one day to come back.

The story of how these problems are all resolved is told in a quiet tone unusual in this sort of epic fantasy. Darian has as much to look within for the solution to these issues as to struggle in the outside world. The woodland journey during which he does this is much of the time a celebration of the renewal of the human soul by the natural world.

Lackey and Dixon have found a courtly, meditative way of telling an attractively simple story. Darian’s growth to final maturity is inevitable, but still fascinating. –Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk
